Exhibition Text

A comprehensive selection of artworks covering a range of mediums is on display in the Earl Street Journal exhibition at milford galleries queenstown.

Complemented by the burnished bronze of Paul Dibble’s sculptures and the rich greens of Lyndsay Patterson’s carved glass, Michael Hight, Bruce Hunt, Dick Frizzell and Justin Boroughs paint their landscapes in gold, green and sienna. Garry Currin’s evocative Various Distances Apart, Kaipara glows dark and golden while Ralph Hotere’s work on paper, Let Us Weep… uses darker bronze hues and a burnt orange horizon to suggest the turbulent history of Parihaka.

The symmetry of Nigel Brown’s Madonna Mountain, Neal Palmer’s New Zealand flax work and the sinuous Ann Robinson Large Twisted Flax Pod all display an organic elegance of pattern and texture, their green tones reminiscent of the bush. The sparkling blue of Reuben Paterson’s kowhaiwhai glitter painting and the magnificent Kawaroa Paddling Pool by Michael Smither speak of the sea, as does the cool, curved glass of Galia Amsel’s Floe 8.

Renowned sculptor Neil Dawson, ceramicists Bridie Henderson and Katherine Smyth, and painters Mike Petre and Jenna Packer round off a show that celebrates the depth and diversity of our represented artists.
