On 2 February Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi opens Concerning Nurture, a comprehensive exhibition of over 30 new works from painter Nigel Brown.
Concerning Nurture embodies one of the enduring themes of Brown’s art practice, the place of humankind within the natural environment. The artist presents an holistic vision of the land where each living organism is part of and contributes to the wairua of a larger whole, but which is increasingly threatened by human development. The ‘stars’ of New Zealand’s flora and fauna (kiwi, tui, kauri) all feature in Brown’s paintings, but he also reminds us of the less famous inhabitants of bush, mountain and sea: the pipi, huhu beetle, and the pua o Te Rēinga (Dactylanthus taylorii or wood rose). Viewers are entreated to take on the mantle of kaitiaki to ensure the continued presence of these living treasures.
Concerning Nurture at Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi, Waitangi Treaty Grounds, runs 2 Feburary - 19 May 2018
